MetaMask Card review

The card for the wallet you already have. Funds stay in your MetaMask until the moment you pay — the lowest-friction entry into self-custodial spending.

At €1,500/month with 10% foreign-currency spending, MetaMask Card is worth +€162 a year after fees — Nº 6 of 11 in our calculator. Try your own numbers.

MetaMask's Mastercard connects directly to your own wallet: assets remain under your keys until authorization. The standard card is free and pays 1% back in mUSD — a stablecoin, so your reward doesn't evaporate with the market. The Metal tier lifts that to 3% on your first $10,000 of annual spend, then 1% after.

Availability: MetaMask has paused new card sign-ups in the United Kingdom and the United States, with no date for reopening. Existing cardholders there keep using their cards. EEA and Latin American residents can still sign up.

The fee that matters is the 1% cross-border charge on the free tier: MetaMask adds it whenever the merchant sits outside your country, which for a Dutch user means a German web shop as much as a holiday in Turkey. That wipes out the 1% cashback on every such purchase. Metal waives it, but Metal is paused. There is also a 0.5% charge when the stablecoin you spend from is in a currency that is neither yours nor the merchant's, which catches mUSD spending in non-euro countries such as Romania or Hungary.

Unspent balances can sit in yield-earning positions through MetaMask's DeFi integrations, which narrows the gap to ether.fi's "your money keeps working" pitch — with a far simpler mental model.

Licensing: MetaMask holds no licence of its own for the card. Its help centre says Baanx provides the card, Monavate issues it and Mastercard runs the network, with those partners holding the regulatory authorisations in each country where the card is offered. Monavate is UAB Monavate, an e-money institution authorised by the Bank of Lithuania. The wallet side is self-custodial software and unregulated.

What works

  • Cashback in a stablecoin — no token-price roulette
  • Zero setup if you already use MetaMask
  • Free tier with real 1% back; wide availability
  • Self-custodial with familiar UX

What doesn't

  • 3% needs the $199/yr Metal tier — and Metal orders are paused since June 2, 2026
  • New sign-ups paused in the UK and US
  • 1% cross-border fee on the free tier cancels the cashback abroad; 0.5% more when your stablecoin matches neither currency
  • Narrower set of spendable assets than exchange cards
  • No credit line — debit only
Watch outOn the free card, anything bought from a merchant outside your country costs 1% extra, so treat MetaMask as a domestic-spending card. Metal orders are paused as of June 2, 2026, so new users start on the free 1% virtual card. When Metal returns, do the math: $300 back on $10k minus the $199 fee leaves $101 — barely ahead of the free card's $100 on the same spend. The perks justify Metal, not the cashback.

Who it's for: existing MetaMask users who spend mostly at home and want stablecoin rewards and self-custody without learning a new wallet, vault or chain. For travel or non-euro countries, Bleap is the better self-custody pick.
