The best crypto cards in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the few EU countries where ether.fi Cash is not available. Dutch residents get the full choice of euro cards otherwise, so Bleap is the leading self-custody option and Krak the cleanest exchange card.

Paying in euros: FX only matters abroad

With the euro as local currency, FX fees only apply when you travel or buy from shops pricing in other currencies. Two cards still deserve a note. MetaMask’s free tier charges 1% on any merchant outside your country, which for a Dutch user includes a German web shop, so its 1% cashback disappears on cross-border purchases. And ether.fi Cash, the highest-rate card on the site, is not offered in the Netherlands, which leaves Bleap as the leading self-custody option and Krak as the cleanest exchange card.

Tax when you spend crypto in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is unusual: the Belastingdienst does not tax individual crypto gains as such. Crypto counts as an asset in box 3, valued at its market price on January 1, and you pay tax on a deemed return rather than on what you actually sold or spent. For 2026 the tax-free allowance is €59,357 per person (€118,714 for fiscal partners), the deemed return on assets other than bank balances is 6.00%, and the rate on that deemed return is 36%. Spending crypto with a card is therefore not itself a taxable event for a private investor; what matters is what you hold on January 1. If your real return was lower than the deemed one, the counter-evidence procedure lets you use the actual figure, including the change in value of your crypto. Only if you earn crypto through extra work, or trade so actively that it becomes a business, does box 1 income tax apply. There is no Belastingdienst guidance on card cashback; crypto received as cashback simply becomes part of your box 3 assets at the next reference date.

Funding a card from a Dutch bank

Instant payments have been the standard for Dutch transfers since 2023, arriving in about five seconds, so euro top-ups to any of these cards are near-immediate. iDEAL is being rebranded to Wero through 2026 and 2027, but card top-ups here are plain SEPA transfers, not iDEAL. Your BSN may only be used by organisations the law allows; a crypto card provider will verify you with a passport or ID card and, under MiCA, must hold an AFM licence or a passported EEA one.

This is general information, not tax advice. Rules change and your situation may differ; check with a local adviser before relying on it.
